Policy consultation activity at a Spanish school

Policy consultation activity at a Spanish school

In April 2023, the University Institute for Studies on Migration (IUEM) organized a policy consultation to migrant children in a Spanish school, as part of the IMMERSE project. The charter school Lourdes FUHEM, in Madrid, joined us to gather the opinion of some of their students.

  • Participants: 12 migrant students divided in 3 groups.
  • Profile: 12-14 year old children, from diverse countries: Dominican Republic, Colombia, Morocco, Honduras, Venezuela, Guinea, Sweden, Peru and Spain.
  • Activity duration: 2 hours.

The IMMERSE CYPAG helped design the workshop. The workshop led by IUEM lecturer Yoan Molinero, who presented the project to the children and helped them develop their proposals from some simple exercises. These were the guidelines used in the activity:

  • Introduction (10 mins)

  • Presentation of IMMERSE project results (15 mins)

  • Questions: 3 blocks of 10 minutes to discuss a hypothetical situation, followed by 10 minutes to write the conclusions by each of the 3 student groups.

    1. If you were a teacher/school principal, what would you do to improve the situation?
    2. If you were a political leader, what proposal would you promote to change the situation…?
    3. Taking into account (…research evidence…), what change should we aspire to? What’s your opinion about it? How would you improve it? Who should take it into account? In relation to (…this fact/aspect/result…), what are the intervention priorities?
  • Final question: What should the best inclusive school/community/country look like?

In the next article we will learn about the conclusions reached by the children.
