Beyond borders: a pedagogical proposal on migration and refugee issues

Description

This document is a teacher's guide to help students in all age ranges (5-18) to become familiar with the reality of migration and refuge through a series of activities that will allow them to empathise with the different situations that people experience as part of the migration crisis. One of the core objectives of this guide is to contribute to build a citizenship compromised with social justice and that is competent in order to live together in a democratic way with people from different cultural origins. In this sense, intercultural education is seen as a key tool to achieve this goal, as it allows to build positive cultural relationships and bonds between different groups of people aimed at creating fairer societies. Fostering empathy, cooperation, respect towards diversity and the necessary skills to live together is imperative to achieve this. This guide offers a series of activities and group dynamics oriented towards participation and focused on the students. It offers flexible and adaptable activities and it encourages the participation of the whole school community (teaching body, student body and families).
