Description
The project was created out of the need to provide remedial education in the form of afternoon support classes, which emphasizes language acquisition, mathematics, and homework support, to minors between the ages of 6-18 that live in temporary hosting facilities and are enrolled in public schools. It also accepts minors from accommodation facilities and welcomes other children that live in the neighbourhood. Additionally, intensive lessons in Greek, English and German for teenagers aged 16 to 18 are provided. Since June 2017, the programme is being implemented at METAdrasi’s premises and at schools in the urban area of Athens and is serving more than 2,900 students. The classes are delivered by METAdrasi’s educational staff and its objective is the establishment of a framework of support for the integration of refugee and migrant children. In 2018, the programme expanded to Thessaloniki. During the pandemic of Covid-19 the lessons take place online. In 2019, the programme was founded by the Hilton Humanitarian Prize and with own resources. Since summer 2020 educational programmes for refugees and migrants in Athens are also funded by Liu Kuo-Chun Educational Foundation, Hong Kong, as well as by individual volunteers’ contribution.

After one year of successful implementation in Athens, programme also expanded to Thessaloniki.
Motivation for the submission
The “Step2School” Education Programme is relevant to the IMMERSE project, as it aligns with its objective of enhancing the socio-educative inclusion of refugee and migrant children in order to foster the construction of inclusive and cohesive societies. The programme has also managed to include both the public sector and the local authorities (municipal schools) and NGOs whilst trying to achieve the objective mentioned above.
