Description
The Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) has activated this project to favour the implementation of literacy and personalized educational paths for 1000 unaccompanied and separated migrant children (UAMs) in various schools across Italy. The aim is to facilitate their access to school and favour a rapid process of inclusion, by intervening as soon as UAMs arrive on the national territory and before their access to ordinary school. Linguistic literacy is facilitated using new technologies. A e-learning platform has been developed with three-level courses and various materials at disposal of teachers and students, which include also modules dedicated to the development of transversal social and civic competences, aimed at improving students’ wellbeing and strengthening their relational capacities. The project incentivizes also other activities (art and music workshops, sports, intercultural citizenship activities, field trip, work counselling, etc.) and promotes the creation of school networks and the dissemination of good practices. The initiative is funded by the European Commission (Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2014-20) and started in 2019 with a preliminary study on the condition of unaccompanied and separated migrant children in Italy, carried out by ISMU Foundation.

Evaluation ex post
The project requires schools to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the courses at different stages. However, evaluation reports are not publicly available.
Evaluation of the first edition is not available. The second edition is on-going. It is possible that evaluation has been carried out at school level.
Projects’ deliverables
There is no dedicated website for the project. The online platform with the teaching materials is not accessible by third parties. The project is promoted on the websites of the participating schools.
The research reports have been developed by ISMU but have not been published yet. A first result-based document may be published in September 2021.
Reproducibility
The project is now in its second edition. Courses have been activated in different schools across Italy. The tools have been created in order to be applicable in different contexts, while at the same time allowing flexibility in the realization of individual learning paths.
Motivation for the submission
The project aims at giving unaccompanied migrant minors the linguistic tools necessary for a rapid process of inclusion, through the use of a e-learning platform and the collaboration of different institutions (networks). The online modalities favoured the inclusion path also during the pandemic crisis and the school closure. It balances well standardization (teaching materials) and flexibility (individual learning paths and specific support). The project is replicated in different schools across the national territory.
