Multitasking Cooperative Classrooms (Aulas Cooperativas Multitarea)

Description

The Padre Piquer Training Centre is a state-subsidised school in Madrid, owned by the Montemadrid Foundation and run by the Society of Jesus. The project of pedagogical innovation called “Multitasking Cooperative Classrooms” was launched in the 2003-2004 academic year and continues still today, following the principles of inclusive school. The project is based on key elements: the architectural change of the classroom, a new arrangement of the curriculum, the promotion of shared teaching, flexibility in organisation, use of digital technologies and cooperative learning. The key objectives are cooperative learning and the possibility of carrying out different tasks in the classroom to break down barriers and then reduce school absenteeism. First, the project aims to eliminate physical barriers, turning traditional classrooms into new educational spaces that integrate about 60 students and where several teachers can work at the same time. The classrooms allow for flexible groupings, respect for different learning rhythms and cooperative interaction. Second, it erases subjects and textbooks, giving space to materials created by the teachers themselves. The funding sources are: Governmental funds (City Councils and in some cases regional government); Fundación Montemadrid; and since 2016, Project ACM3.0 has been financed by Bankia’s initiative “En-Acción”.
