Education (Admission to Schools) Act 2018

Description

The Act is intended to create a more parent-friendly, equitable and consistent approach to how school admissions policies operate for all primary and post primary schools. This should help to ensure that all children, regardless of nationality or religion, should be able to access education. For example provisions include the requirement for schools to set out arrangements for students that do not wish to attend religious instruction. This is particularly important in Ireland as the majority of state funded primary schools have a Catholic Ethos. These changes will encourage a more inclusive environment in Irish education. The Act also give the Minister of Education power to compel schools to open special classes.
